The weather finally cleared and it was game on for an awesome course created by race directors Matt lash and Neville Wells.
The top 4 teams were in a class of their own with all-male team Out for the View clearing the course first and were deserved winners. The other three teams Moose Hunter, Virbac and Kauri Coasters finished within 13 minutes of each other making for an incredible finish.
The next four teams spent 24hours doing battle exchanging positions regularly with Newstead Bulls, Boots 'n All and Cannonballs finishing only three minutes apart with Naki Bits just 24 minutes back.
Thunderbirds were the last team to complete the full course with Nick Collins rating it as one of the best 24hour courses he has ever done… and for those that know Nick that takes some doing having been around and competed since the first southern traverse I believe. One of his other favourite 24 hour races is Rogue Adventure's Rogue Raid which is part of the Aussie A1 Series. Will Nick be the first A1 Club member to cross the pond and be in both series?
Team 7 Lost Some Were, a local Waitomo team lost a team member early on, but showed they had what it takes to push on and completed the full course as an unranked team of 3.
Cornivorus River Ducks and the all women's team Journey Wild were short course but completed everything except the last mountain bike leg. Team ARC had a team member injure a knee on the second trek which meant the end of their competitive game, but managed to make it to Transition and ride home to the finish line. That leaves Hard'n up Princess who battled hard but had problems on the second trek so decided to just keep walking all the way to the finish line to enjoy the scenery.
Well that’s a wrap for Race 01 of the A1 NZ series. Massive thanks to the race directors, teams, locals and volunteers who made this event awesome to be part of...
